To understand why women should start demanding the data, we must first confront the enduring shadow of the "wandering womb."
The concept of the wandering womb originated in ancient Greece, where it was believed that a "displaced" uterus could cause various physical and mental illnesses. This pseudoscience marked the beginning of what would later be termed “female hysteria.” For centuries, hysteria was used as a catch-all diagnosis to blame a woman's emotions for virtually any ailment, while real, treatable conditions went unacknowledged and untreated.
The wandering womb is just one example of the blatantly sexist beliefs that have persisted—and continue to persist—in medicine. Historically, women have been seen as flawed versions of men, with ailments specific to them dismissed or vilified. During medieval Europe, menstruating women were labeled impure, with menstrual blood thought to poison crops, sour wine, and even dull mirrors. These beliefs led to isolation during menstruation, and over time, menstruation was linked to demonic possession and witchcraft.
These barbaric misconceptions aren’t relics of the past—they echo through modern medicine. Consider the “husband stitch,” a practice in which a woman who sustains a perineal tear during childbirth is given extra sutures to tighten the vaginal opening for her partner’s sexual pleasure—often without her consent. This unethical procedure has caused severe physical pain, sexual dysfunction, and psychological trauma for countless women, who often discover the violation only after experiencing chronic pain during intimacy.
Or look to the present day, where the overturning of Roe v. Wade has created a chilling landscape for women’s healthcare. Pregnant individuals are being denied lifesaving care. Some are forced to carry miscarried fetuses until life-threatening infections develop, jeopardizing their own survival. These preventable tragedies are the result of policies that prioritize control over women’s autonomy at the expense of their lives.
For as long as records exist, women have had to fight tooth and nail for their health and dignity. The stakes are too high for us to stop now. It’s time for women to take back control—not just of our bodies, but of the narrative surrounding our health.
Enter Inanna Certifications.
Inanna Certifications was born out of the recognition that the worst abuses and neglect of women’s health often culminate in severe trauma—or even death. The system is broken: women are dismissed, their pain minimized, and their voices ignored. Finding a healthcare practitioner who truly listens, leaves bias at the door, and digs deeper to uncover root causes can be an arduous, years-long journey. Equally daunting is the search for supplements that aren’t riddled with dangerous contaminants, heavy metals, or unverified ingredients. Without trustworthy oversight, women are left navigating a minefield of misleading labels and unsafe products, risking their health while simply trying to improve it.
Inanna Certifications seeks to change this. Our mission is to create a trusted standard for identifying practitioners and supplements that center women’s health, respect consent, and prioritize patient well-being above all else. We hold both practitioners and products to a higher standard—one where women’s unique health concerns are never marginalized or dismissed, but instead investigated with care, compassion, and scientific rigor.
By demanding transparency, accountability, and evidence-based care, we can challenge the outdated systems that have failed women for far too long. Together, we can ensure that the next generation won’t have to fight the same battles.
It’s time to demand the data. It’s time to demand better.
